Malaria Response Interventions in Nigeria

Objectives

This ongoing WHO response aims to target child mortality caused by malaria, malnutrition and other comorbidities in Borno State, Nigeria by leveraging the existing machinery of the polio campaign and the health emergencies programme to reach children living in remote areas through 5 monthly rounds of mass drug administration (MDA).

Abstract

The MDA campaign is administered by community health workers and consists of Artesunate + Amodiaquine, 5 monthly rounds during the high transmission season. (Series of 3 campaigns, 1st November 2017, 3rd planned for October 2018)

Concomitant interventions:

  • Wild poliovirus type 1
  • LLIN distribution providing universal coverage
  • Vector control

1.2 million children under 5 regardless of infection status have been reached from 5 areas in Borno State.
