Evaluating the validity, feasibility and acceptability of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) rapid diagnostic tests used at community- and facility- level in Cambodia

Objectives

This project aims to conduct a study to explore three major objectives to support future rapid implementation of routine G6PD testing for malaria case management: 

  1. The ability of health workers (facility-based and community-based) to correctly conduct the G6PD RDT and interpret the result during training and at 3 months post-training,
  2. The feasibility of including this RDT in the current workflow for malaria diagnosis and treatment at health centre and community level with hypothetical primaquine administration,
  3. The acceptability to health workers, village malaria workers, and the patients being tested of including this RDT in the standard practices for malaria diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract

Following the initial demonstration that the currently available G6PD RDT performs very well in identification of G6PD deficient samples, further evidence is required to support the programmatic roll-out of this RDT in Cambodia.
