European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP)

Consultation date: 15 October 2014

Malaria elimination strategy

European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) aims to strengthen and integrate existing European and African health research programmes by supporting multicentre projects that combine clinical trials, capacity building and networking.

The EDCTP partnership unifies 14 participating European Union (EU) Member States, including Norway and Switzerland, with sub-Saharan African countries. EDCTP was set up under the European Commission’s FP6 for R&D and the current EDCTP programme will end in 2015. A second phase of the EDCTP programme (EDCTP2) will begin in the final quarter of 2014 and the EDCTP2 work plan for 2014-2015 is currently being prepared. Along with an EU contribution of €683 million, for the 10-year programme period, EDCTP2 will continue to support the development of new diagnostics, drugs, vaccines and microbicides against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

Malaria research projects funded by The European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) focus on accelerating the development of new or improved drugs, vaccines, microbicides and diagnostics. These projects are centred on phase II and III clinical trials in sub-Saharan Africa.
